The present study investigates the impact of length measurement instruction implemented in out-of-school learning environments (OSLEs) on primary school students’ mathematics motivation and their attitudes toward mathematics activities. A quasi-experimental design with pretest–posttest control groups was employed, involving fourth-grade students. Data were collected using the Mathematics Motivation Scale and the Attitude Scale toward Mathematics Activities. The intervention was carried out in OSLEs over a five-week period, comprising a total of 30 instructional hours. For data analysis, independent-samples t-tests, multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), and repeated-measures ANOVA were conducted. The findings indicate that instruction delivered in OSLEs leads to statistically significant improvements in students’ motivation toward mathematics and their attitudes toward mathematics activities. Moreover, the results demonstrate large effect sizes and reveal that these improvements are sustained over time, as evidenced by retention test scores. Overall, the findings suggest that mathematics instruction conducted in OSLEs constitutes an effective approach for enhancing students’ affective outcomes in mathematics. Based on these results, it is recommended that such environments be integrated into instructional practices in a more systematic and intentional manner, particularly for mathematics topics closely connected to real-life contexts, such as measurement and geometry.
